Cork, Ireland – There's More To Do Than Kissing Stones
Cork, Ireland is a wonderful vacation destination for families and people of all ages. It's the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland and it's name literally means "marshy place", referring to its location near the River Lee. Probably the city's most famous attraction is the Blarney Stone, found on the Blarney Castle estate. Legend has it that if you kiss the stone, you will have the gift of smooth speech forever. Give it a try, if you wish. The river Lee flows into Cork Harbour, which hosts the Irish Navy and contains a large number of islands of which many are worth visiting.
Cork County GaolThe Cork County Gaol is a historic facility that educates its visitors as to what it was like to be a prisoner in the 19th century. Children especially will love the West Cork Model Railway, which is a replica of what the village was like in the 1940's. If it's adventure you're after, there are sporting events, and matches or fishing trips to enjoy. There is a wide variety of pubs and shops that will appeal to almost anyone. The Beamish Brewery is known for producing hearty Irish beer and offers tours and a pint during the summer. Four Faced LiarThe historic architecture of Cork, Ireland is primarily Georgian in style. The County Hall tower here is the tallest building in Ireland. Another famous building here is the St. Anne's church tower of Shandon, known as the "Four-faced Liar." (The clock on each of the four sides appears to have a different time.) Cork is not only rich in history and architecture, but in culture as well. The Opera House is one of the few modern opera houses in Ireland.
There are also schools for art, design, and theatre. A number of writers have been birthed in Cork. For the history buff, there is the famous Desmond Castle where soldiers were jailed during the Revolutionary War. Cork County has the nickname, "The Rebel County" because of the various uprisings that have started here in Cork, Ireland over the years. The star-shaped Charles Fort Kinsale was built in the 17th century. Garnish IslandWith the River Lee and many beautiful parks, the scenery of Cork is definitely something to see. Garnish Island is a breathtaking place to visit with stunning gardens and architecture. There is also the Mizen Vision that offers an incredible view of the rugged Irish coastline.
