I have my mum to thank for the phrase that always comes to mind when considering the weather: "It's a case of whether it will or whether it won't". Will it rain, or will it shine? Ultimately, it will do what it will do. I think it's safe to say many areas of the world have experienced some particularly harsh weather over the last three or four months. Heavy snow on US East Coast has made it the snowiest winter on record there, while heavy rain in California led to mud slides. In Australia, Melbourne has suffered flash floods after an inch of rainfall in 1/2 hour (average rainfall there for February is only twice this amount), New South Wales has also had widespread flooding after heavy rain; ironically other parts of this continent were baked by heatwaves in November leading to fears of major bush fires. Europe and the UK have also had it very cold this winter with more snow than usual. Ireland had the wettest November since records began 150 years ago, followed by a colder than usual winter in line with much of northern Europe. Even here in the usually mild climate of West Cork we have experienced regular frosts and even snow that settled... our 70 year old neighbour, born and bred in Co. Cork, says he's never known it so cold. All this yet Vancouver is lacking snow for the Winter Olympics that started this wee. Apparently the cold air from the North is failing to push the mild air back over the Pacific. The human race doesn't have much control over the weather. But it's one thing we would all love when we are planning a vacation or holiday break. Perhaps that is why the New Zealander, Ken Ring made the papers in Ireland under the headline "Kiwi weatherman offers ray of summer sunshine" with his predictions for the Irish weather in 2010. Yes, no matter how unlikely it may seem, Ken has had considerable success predicting the weather here on the other side of the world. <a target="_new" href="http://www.independent.ie/farming/news-features/kiwi-weatherman-offers-ray-of-summer-sunshine-2043447.html">You can read about it here</a> And this year he's predicting what we are all hoping for: some decent summer weather, with a dry, sunny June and a dry period in the middle of summer with temperatures of 25C/77F. However, in order to keep the Emerald Isle green, there will still be rain. According to Ken, March, April and September will be wet. October, on the other hand will be dry. So, if you choose to put your faith in Ken's predictions, now could be the time to arrange a trip to Ireland this summer. But, even if you don't believe Ken's forecast now could still be the time to visit Ireland. No matter what the weather there is always something to do here and there's always a warm Irish welcome.
